What Am I Supposed To Be Doing?

Have you ever wondered what you are really supposed to be doing? Maybe you are at work and don’t know what direction you need to go. Maybe you can’t separate what’s important from what’s urgent. Or maybe it’s at home. You are fine at work, but when you get back to your house at the end of the day you don’t know where to start. There are chores that need to be done, repairs that need to be finished, people that need you, and probably not enough time for everything.

In his book, The Advantage, Patrick Lencioni explains how leaders can cultivate a healthy organization. He reveals six key questions to help create organizational clarity and alignment. Without knowing how to answer these questions you will probably be lost and have no idea what you are supposed to be doing.

  1. Why Do We Exist?
  2. This is what drives you and inspires you, your mission and your purpose.

  3. How Do We Behave?
  4. This is the way you treat people and tasks, regardless of your behavioral style.

  5. What Do We Do?
  6. This is a short list of what is most important to you.

  7. How Will We Succeed?
  8. This is the way you are going to achieve what is most essential.

  9. What Is Most Important Right Now?
  10. This is what’s most vital at this time, and without it you will either be distracted or isolated.

  11. Who Must Do What?
  12. This is about determining expectations and roles so you know who has what.

What is interesting about these questions is that they are not strictly applicable for organizations alone. They are great questions to ask in a marriage or family. I will admit that it might seem cold and awkward to sit down with your spouse and ask these six questions like you’re some big corporate conglomerate trying to take over the world. However, if you can’t find a way to have these conversations and create clarity on what you want together, you might find yourselves going to two different directions.

I would love to hear if anyone has any ideas on how you could tackle these questions in a warmer way. How would you have this conversation with your spouse or finance? How would you ensure that you are both moving in the same direction and wanting the same things? Share a comment.

Trust His Plans

I was reading a devotional this morning written by Rick Warren, where he talked about how the 40 year journey from Egypt to the Promised Land should have only taken a few weeks. The reason it took longer was because God was continually testing His people.

I think more often than not we pray and ask God to take us out of the situations we are in, instead of praying and asking God what we can get out of the situations we are in.

God might be testing you, trying to teach you something, or preparing you for what’s coming next. There is peace in trusting Him instead of leaning on our own understanding. We need to believe that the God of the universe who knows no limits understands what He is doing. He has a plan and we can trust that He will provide a future of goodness and hope.

We need to pray, but we can’t forget that prayer doesn’t just have the power to change our problems. Prayer also has the power to change our perspective.

Value of Uncertainty

“The uncertainty of the outcome does not negate the value of the pursuit.”

We often allow not having all the details deter us from pursing what we know is right. However, doing the right thing isn’t always the easy choice. It also doesn’t mean that everything turns out the way we want it, but the uncertainty of the outcome does not negate the value of the pursuit. Just because you don’t know how something will turn out in the end, doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.

Realignment in the New Year

As we look ahead to a new year, we need to remember how easy it can be to start drifting and falling away from our priorities. That’s when we have to realign, resubmit, and recommit our lives to what really matters most.

Have Confidence in 2016

I read an article that I enjoyed so much I wanted to repost it here and encourage you to subscribe to Jon Acuff’s blog if you are interested in receiving encouragement to design a life worth living. According to Jon Acuff there are three things you need to give yourself confidence and have the best shot at accomplishing your goals in the new year.

  1. Clarity – A focused sense of what you’re trying to accomplish.
  2. Consistency – The grind of stacking small wins on top of small wins, day after day.
  3. Community – Leaning on friends when you don’t feel like hustling.

Those three “c words” will help you stay on track and accomplish your dreams, plans, and goals 2016. However there is another “c word” that is a sure-fire way to derail you. This one is straight poison and unfortunately social media has a tendency to pour gasoline on the fire.

It’s comparison.

As the one year ends we reflect and as the new year begins we dream and plan. Every year we need to remind ourselves that comparison leads to arrogance or shame, but never happiness.

Merry Christmas

Audrey and I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This past year has been an amazing experience as we have both grown in our faith, built stronger relationships with loved ones, and ultimately learned to lean not on our own understanding. We are confident that the best is yet to come and can’t wait to see what God has in store.

There’s Power in Writing it Down

Within the last couple of days Jon Acuff sent me an email. Don’t get me wrong we aren’t exactly friends. However, I am sure he would be better off knowing me as his life would then be complete. I subscribe to his newsletter and he said, “Results are more fun than resolutions, but you don’t get the first without the second.” I found it as a powerful reminder on how to create goals. It’s not just about a desired outcome, it’s also about how you plan to take each individual step that will lead you to your destination.

I feel like there is one incredibly important note that needs to be added… Don’t forget to write it down. There is power in writing it down. If you don’t write down the things that you are dreaming, praying, and believing for there is a good chance that when the day comes you will fail to realize it’s significance. Let me explain.

If you are believing for something write it down. If you have a dream, a goal, write it down. If you are praying for something big, don’t just pray. Write it down, date it, and then look back afterwards and celebrate what God has done. I think too many people fail at this step and if you fail to write it down it can become too easy to under appreciate all the blessings in your life.

I met with a Small Group of men this past week. We challenged one another to write down the ridiculously big things we were dreaming, praying, and believing for so that later we can look back and celebrate what God has done. I encourage you to do the same.

Wise Investments

It’s important for your financial future to make wise investments. You can find it in scripture with The Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14-30. It’s equally as vital to make wise investments in other areas if we are to make the most of our lives.

If you don’t eat the things that your body needs and you aren’t getting proper exercise, you fail to make wise physical investments. If you are reading, learning, and growing, you are probably making plenty of wise investments in the area of personal development. There are all types of ways that you can make wise decisions in how you invest your time, talent, and treasure.

If we are to be good stewards then it must become essential to continually develop the things that we have been given. We can make the most of our time, maximize our talents, and multiply our treasure with wise investments. I feel challenged to make wise investments in every area of my life. What is one wise investment you know you need to make?
